Normally I only write stories about the White Sox but this one we is so big that I just have to put it in my column. The Dodgers and Red Sox have completed a deal were LA receives Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto. Carl Crawford will likely go on the deal for the remainder of the season as he will have tommy-john surgery. The Red Sox would receive cash and multiple players to be named later more information will be posted on this huge waiver wire deal so make sure to check back later.
White Sox RHP Gavin Floyd was sent to the Disabled list because of forearm tendonitis but in his place Philip Humber has been reactivated and will start tonight against the Red Sox. Humber has struggled since pitching his perfect game on April 21 but you would have had to imagined that he was dealing with injury during that time.
Humbers struggles often were the result of an inability of his breaking ball moving. Floyd went to the DL on a hot streak allowing only 4 runs in his past four starts those runs came on only one game against the Yankees.
Floyd was supposed to be your own healthy starter you could count on for the whole year with Peavy having an injury track record and Chris Sale has never pitched this many innings before.
With all of these injuries I can almost garrentee you the GM Kenny williams will make a deal for a starter possibly a dempster of a Grienkie, some one of that caliber. Grienkie has been on the Sox radar lately and is the biggest starter on the market behind Cole Hamels.
With John Danks and Philip Humber on the 15-day DL with Gavin Floyd Day-to-day with elbow tendonitis the White Sox are desperate for starting pitching and Zach Greinke just might be their cure. Greinke, 9-3, boasts a 3.57 ERA in 20 starts with the Brewers.
Grienke had a 3.08 ERA before giving up 9 runs in 8 innings to the Pirates so he is pitching a little better than what the stats say just because of one bad outing. The Tigers and Angels are other possible suitors for the Crew’s Ace.
The Tigers are another team that needs starting pitching lacking a #2 starter behind Verlander. Without a move for a pitcher the Tigers will not make it very far in the Postseason if they get there.
The angels on the other hand would need another starter to make up for Ervin Santana’s tough year. He pitches better at home but on the road he has a 7.56 ERA. The Brewers still havent decided %100 if they will deal Greinke because they could feel that they will still be in the race.
But, that will be determined in the next week or so before the July 31 trade deadline. I believe that the Brewers will deal him but it may take quite a few prospects. The White Sox do not have a loaded farm system so this may be harder for GM Kenny Williams to pull the trigger by sending the last top prospects the white Sox have.
Greinke’s last outing at u.s. cellular field he threw 9 shutout inning of baseball. The Sox have already made a major move this year by acquiring 3B Kevin Youkilis from the red sox for virtually nothing. One of the players the sox sent to boston was DFA’d earlier this afternoon.
An addition the rotation would add a lot more depth barring injuries from Sox pitcher this season. hypothetically speaking I would not be surprised to see the white Sox pick up another veteran to help out the rookie bullpen.
Besides Matt Thornton and Jessie Crain when he get off the DL, The sox will have 6 rookie relievers including their closer Addison Reed who has blown only 2 save chances this year.
So obviously some help in the bullpen could also be used.
White Sox GM Kenny Williams was the first to make splash this summer by acquiring Kevin Youkilis from boston for a minor league pitcher and a utility player. Sox fans are hoping that he can do it again as Sox are talking with the NL rival cubs about ace pitcher Ryan Dempster.
Dempster 35, owns a .199 ERA for the Cubs and has been easily their best pitcher and arguably the best pitcher in the National League. The Braves and Dodgers are among other teams in the mix but they have been the most aggressive including the White Sox.
I would see the dodgers getting Garza instead of Dempster because he is under team control for more than just this year as of Dempster who would be half season rental.
The White Sox need starting pitching especially if John Danks is not healthy which he has not been and will likely be out another 3-4 weeks.
Adding Dempster to the mix would make a rotation of when Danks is healthy: Sale, Peavy, Dempster, Danks and Floyd which is extremely solid and would just add more pressure on the Tigers to make a move even when they have committed to not spending anymore money as they already owe 5 players $80 million.
The Sox will head to Boston and Detroit to finish off there road trip then head home for a 3 game homestand with Minnesota.
If Kenny misses out on Dempster he could still go for Grienkie or Liriano which they have inquired on earlier today.
Gavin Floyd will pitch for the White Sox as they look to make it 10 straight wins against the visiting Seattle Mariners. Floyd has been very up-and-down in his past few starts and is ready to make a change.
Floyd has always been a slow starter, and from June 1 on he is a lights out pitcher. (Today is June 2nd) Since the 2010 season the Sox have only lost 3 games to the Mariners they have 21 wins against them.
The White Sox are by far the hottest team in baseball aiming for 10 straight wins, in first place over the Cleveland Indians by 1.5 games and the Detroit Tigers by 5 games.
With the Sox this hot, they have a surge of energy just continuing to propel the team forward on all cylinders. One thing that really pops out at me is that this team is fighting back after giving up the lead, last year it seemed like if the Sox were only 2 runs down that it was game over.
That is something that the Sox have to keep up. The pitching will be solid but if it’s not it’s a necessity for the team to continue to pump out runs like a factory.
The Sox hope lighting strikes twice as they will take the 13th overall pick in the 2012 MLB draft. Last time the Sox picked 13th they acquired Chris Sale, who has the lowest ERA in the American league, second lowest in WHIP, and tied for second with 6 wins.
The White Sox have been criticized by the baseball “experts” so this is the time for the front office to get the farm rolling which was ranked last by ESPN. Now I want to make this straight before I start getting hate mail…Yes the rankings don’t matter and the expert’s opinions don’t matter but I’m just saying.
With the White Sox focusing on Major-league talent, it’s always important to upgrade the farm as well. GM Kenny Williams has a philosophy of win now and he has put a pretty good team on the field most years.
The draft is always a good time to see where your franchise is going and with the 1st pick there are a lot of potential options out there, who knows? Maybe your pick is the next Albert Pujols or Roy Halliday? It would make all baseball fans excited to see what these young players can accomplish.
The Astros have the No. 1 pick in the draft this year as they had the worst record in the league losing more than 100 games. This is Houston’s last year in the NL as they will make the long transition to the American League West division in 2013.
The White Sox have a good core of players this year, particularly veterans. Well.. not to mention Chris Sale, Nate Jones, Addison Read, Dayan Viciedo who have all been major contributor to the club this year and years to come.
This is actually Viciedo’s contract year, He signed a 4-year, $10 million dollar deal way back when. I want to get him locked up for quite a few years, he should be m above average bat with a great throwing arm in Left. His defense has improved tremendously.
Only time will tell when the Sox farm system develops and produces some talented young players.
White Sox have won there 8th straight game by a final score of 4-3. White Sox Starting pitcher Jose Quantina was ejected after throwing behind Ben Zobrist. Ventura was also ejected. Cleveland loss to Kansas City again today which will put the Sox 1.5 games up in first.
With the Sox this hot no team will want to face them, Seattle comes to town after tomorrow’s off day.
Then Toronto will visit the South Siders and inter-league play begins. The Sox will play The Astros, Cardinals, Dodgers, Cubs, and Brewers in that order.
The Sox have always beaten up on NL teams over the past few years so its reckon to be a good month for the Sox in June.
Its looking very good for the Sox at this point in the Season. You can’t really call it early anymore as it’s basically June.
I’m sure it will only be so long before GM Kenny Williams makes a move for an arm or an upgrade at 3rd base. It seems like he is just itching to deal.
With this much success heading the Sox way, I’m sure that owner Jerry Reinsdorf will give the front office what they need for a championship-caliber team.
